Domestic Violence against Women
According to some statistics, an American woman is abused by her husband every 9 seconds. Additionally, it is estimated that 4,000 women per year are killed due to domestic violence. In the face of these stark numbers, spousal and domestic abuse against women is a very real issue.
Reasons for Abuse
There is no one single reason why a man might abuse his lover or wife. It can be said that some men just enjoy the violence and feeling powerful. In other cases, some say that they perform abuse because the women are being stubborn, the woman brought it on herself, or the man wants to show her that he is boss. Either way, violence against women, or VAW, can be deadly.
Types of Domestic Violence
Although you might first think that spousal abuse is purely physical, there are other types of abuse as well. Overall, the main types of violence include the following:
- Physical
- Sexual
- Emotional/Psychological
- Economic/Financial
Outward Signs of Violence against Women
Sometimes, a woman might be too afraid to report spousal abuse performed against her. Although some types of domestic violence such as financial and sexual abuse can be hard to recognize, there are some signs that can indicate an abusive relationship. Domestic violence warning signs can appear as:
- Injuries that often occur “accidentally,” coupled with unexpected absences
- Changes in personality, submissiveness, and shying away from conflict
- Unkind phone calls from the partner in addition to trepidation about the partner
- Weeping and losing self-confidence
