As the recession continues, lawyers across the country are seeing a marked increase in the number of people requesting modifications to their child support and alimony agreements. The unemployment rate for men is substantially larger than the one for women, with men facing a 9.8% unemployment rate compared to 7.5% unemployment rate for women. Furthermore, new jobs being created tend to fall into fields historically dominated by women.
For these reasons, people across the country are requesting changes to the terms of their child support and alimony payments. According to a survey of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 39% of the members said they saw an increase in the number of modifications being made on child support agreements, with 42% saying the numbers for alimony modifications increased. These numbers underscore the difficulty many Americans are having making support payments in this down economy.
