A Florida interest group has hired lobbyists to push state legislators to enact a cap on alimony payments, which would limit alimony to a mere three years. This would mean that dependent former spouses would no longer receive support payments after they had been divorced for three years.
The interest group believes that alimony as a concept stems from an outdated culture in which women were not allowed into the workforce, especially once they had married. However, alimony can be necessary following many divorces, and there is much debate over whether legislation like this could get passed.
