There has been a 20 percent increase in fatalities from child abuse from 2007 to 2008. In 2008, 200 children were fatally abused.

Increased rates of unemployement and drug use are said to be a factor in the increase if child fatal abuse cases. According to the report, unemployed men between 18-30 are the most common abusers. They are with the children while there mothers are at work. Many of these men have previous criminal records.
