Recently released abusive phone messages from Mel Gibson to his girlfriend have captured the nation’s attention, and now domestic violence experts and psychologists are working to get the word out and remind people that ninety percent of verbal abuse escalates into physical abuse. Verbal abuse often goes ignored and unreported, but it is important to trust and follow your instincts if you feel threatened. ”If they’re not respecting you, the best bet is to get out of the relationship,” stated Cesar Campa, spokesman for The Center Against Family Violence in El Paso, Texas.
Furthermore, he says, “You don’t have to wait until you’ve already been hit, or you’ve already been beaten and you’re already on your way to the hospital. If you are in eminent danger, if you feel that they have been threatening you, they’re harassing you and you feel like, ‘Yes, something is definitely going to happen,’ you can get help”.
