In a recent study conducted by a professor at the University of British Columbia, Zach Walsh, results showed that male and female domestic violence perpetrators possess similar personality traits. The study examined 567 psychiatric patients, including 138 women and 93 men with histories of domestic violence. Researchers looked to see if the study’s participants exhibited normal personality characteristics, mentally ill characteristics, or psychopathic characteristics.
Based on the results of the study, Walsh argues that both men and women perpetrators of domestic violence can fit into three subcategories: low pathology perpetrators who exhibit normal personality traits, dysphoric perpetrators exhibiting signs of mental illness such as anxiety or depression, or antisocial perpetrators exhibiting high levels of psychopathic personality traits.
